Sedation Dentistry

At Midtown Manhattan Dental Arts, we understand that dental anxiety is a real and prevalent issue for many patients. The fear and apprehension associated with dental care can prevent individuals from receiving the vital oral health treatment they need and deserve. That’s why we are proud to offer sedation dentistry, which ensures a comfortable and stress-free experience for those who need a little extra help getting through their dental appointments.

What Is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is often used by dental professionals to help patients feel more relaxed and at ease during dental procedures. It involves administering medication to help them remain calm and comfortable, allowing the patient to undergo necessary treatments without anxiety or discomfort.

The Types Of Dental Sedation

At Midtown Manhattan Dental Arts, we recognize that every patient is unique and requires different levels of sedation to feel comfortable. That’s why we offer a variety of dental sedation options, ranging in strength and method, to accommodate every patient’s needs and the specific dental procedure they require.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation that helps patients feel more relaxed and at ease during dental procedures. It is inhaled through a mask and takes effect quickly, allowing patients to feel more comfortable while remaining conscious and able to communicate with the dental team.

Nitrous oxide is safe and wears off quickly after the procedure, allowing patients to return to their normal activities without delay.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves the administration of a sedative pill, usually taken an hour before the dental appointment. This type of sedation ranges from mild to moderate, depending on the dosage. Patients remain awake but feel more relaxed and drowsy, which helps to alleviate anxiety and nervousness during dental procedures.

It’s important to note that patients who opt for oral sedation should arrange for someone to accompany them to and from their appointment, as the effects will take some time to wear off.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is a more powerful form of sedation, where medication is administered intravenously. This allows for a deeper state of relaxation and can be adjusted throughout the procedure as needed. Patients may feel drowsy or even fall asleep, but they can still be easily awakened if necessary.

Due to the nature of IV sedation, patients must have a friend or family member accompany them to and from their appointment, and they should not operate a vehicle or heavy machinery for the remainder of the day.
